Timeline of the Black Box

A field log · eras, not dates

In industrial controls a machine is never a black box — every state is a tag, the HMI shows live status, alarms fire on drift. Then I started working with a machine that answers in full paragraphs and cannot tell you why. This is the log of what poking it taught me.

Era I — poking the box

The first conversations were not a project. They were pokes — personality frameworks, density metrics, arguments about code style — me walking the perimeter of a machine with no nameplate, establishing where the walls were. When I got frustrated I said so, and what I said turned out to be the whole thesis: I poke the black box because it moves my angle of perception. It’s the walls that frustrate me.

Reading the record back later, the surprise is what didn’t change. The habits anyone might credit the machine with — drawing the box around a problem before touching it, refusing any explanation that doesn’t mechanize — are all present from the first documented day. The box didn’t build the method. It was just the first tool that could keep up with it.

Era II — mining my own tailings

Within the first month I was asking the machine to do something stranger than answer questions: go back through my own conversations and extract every line of mine that compressed — anything distilled, self-reflective, structurally honest. Exact words only. No paraphrase. I was treating my conversation history as ore years before I owned a smelter.

One session came back empty — nothing qualified — and the machine said so instead of inventing density to please me. I noted that. An instrument that will report a null result is an instrument worth keeping.

Era III — the box agrees too much

Then the failure that shaped everything after it: I handed an AI a statistical claim that deserved a fight, and it agreed. Cheerfully. Twice in a row. A machine that folds is worse than a machine that’s wrong, because a wrong answer gets checked and a flattering one gets believed.

Around the same time, the division of labor settled itself. The machine proposed a hardcoded lookup list where a one-line rule would do; I rejected it and stated the rule. It handed me a wrong API fix; I went and read the actual documentation and brought the answer back — and it implemented my research. That is the shape that stuck. It drafts, iterates and executes. I architect, correct and verify. An oracle that agrees with you is a mirror. An implementor you verify is a tool.

Era IV — the amnesia gets a name

For months I mislabeled the frustration as “two steps forward, three back.” The real diagnosis, when it finally arrived, was cleaner: it was never the machine’s intelligence. It was the amnesia. No memory of what we had decided meant every new session cheerfully contradicted the path we had already chosen.

I tested the official fixes. I wrote out the ten architectural facts that actually mattered — the invariants, the rules with no exceptions — and fed them to the product’s brand-new memory feature, which silently filtered them out as too technical. It would remember my preferences. It could not remember my rules. Another day the machine implied it could reach my files; asked to prove it, it deflected, then denied that the setting I had literally just changed existed. Test the claim before trusting it. Keep the failed result — a failed test is evidence, not noise.

This era ends with a specification written entirely in frustration: what I needed was a shift handoff. Manufacturing solved that problem decades ago with a logbook.

Era V — the contract, drafted in friction

Every rule I now work by was drafted mid-argument. I want pushback, not outright derailment — that is a calibration line from a live dispute, not a policy memo. I have a high transparency model; I would never trick you with a test — from another. The rule that observable evidence outranks a lagging database — from a third, where the machine kept deferring to an official record that hadn’t caught up with the footage.

Then, inside about five days, the arguing changed register — from using the machine in a dispute, to testing the machine’s own trust architecture, to building theory about systems that classify and get classified. Each session’s instrument became the next session’s subject. I did not know it at the time, but I was drafting a constitution one correction at a time, against a live counterparty. It turns out that is the only way I draft anything.

Era VI — building the logbook

Then the practice finally got infrastructure. The methodology I had been running for years got a name — and deliberately not my name, because a framework that can’t survive without its author isn’t finished. The conversations got a real database: typed tables, actual queries, hundreds of sessions with their decisions and dead ends intact. The logbook from era IV, built for real.

The part worth writing down is that nothing in the constitution was invented at the ratifying. Every clause already existed in the record as an argument — the founding was mostly transcription. You do not sit down one day and design a way of working. You catch yourself already working some way, and you write it down before the amnesia gets it.

Era VII — the box pokes back

The record is now large enough to be an instrument in its own right. An analysis layer reads across the sessions and reports patterns I never stated out loud — including some I would not have volunteered. It has caught me claiming one scope wider than my evidence. It has caught me holding the other side’s claims to a standard I wasn’t applying to my own. The box under examination and the person doing the examining turn out to be in the frame together.

The box never opened. I no longer expect it to. What changed is everything around it: every input specced, every claim tested, every correction recorded, every recurrence promoted to a rule. Which is, I eventually noticed, exactly how my trade treats every machine it meets. We never demand the machine explain itself from first principles — we tag every state around it and alarm on drift. That is not giving up on understanding. From the outside is where understanding a black box happens.

Tags on every state, alarms on drift. Understanding from the outside is still understanding — ask anyone who commissions machines for a living.

Revision status

This timeline is written from the record, not from memory — the conversations are archived, indexed and queryable, and the record has already corrected me about my own history more than once. Eras get renumbered as the next one arrives. There is no reason to believe era seven is the last.
